This year 2008 Agni Nakshatram begins on May 3rd, and continues through out the month and ends around the 28th.
On 8th May is Akshaya Tritiya and every woman who is someone to be reckoned with would nag her husband to accompany her to the jeweller's shop at T. Nagar, and buy some gold jewellery on this auspicious day. Auspicious Day for buying gold Jewellery? One must be nutty & batty to give heed to the greed and arrogance of the Jewellers of South India to listen to such crap.
It is the most idiotic and asinine reason one can adduce to part with one's money and add to the jewellers' pile of gold and wealth.
In fact on this day it is auspicious to have Darshan of Vasantha Vishnu, take bath in rivers which have running water, give alms to the poor, and abide by the virtues of one's Kula. If one is rich, one can donate gold ornaments to Brahmins who are scholars and this donation would be multiplied like akshya. At least that poor brahmana would not suffer due to want.
There is no sanctity in the Sastras for buying gold jewellery on Akshaya Tritiya day and since the jewellers of South India know how intelligent our ladies are they are certain to reap a windfall gain on this day.
Unfortunately there is no monopoly on ignorance and there is no stopping a belief when it is clothed in Ambal's Arakku colour Pattu Pudavai.
Year in and year out I am campaigning against this deleterious practice but our foolish ladies do not seem to listen. So this year, God Almighty has given me a golden chance to reinforce my arguments against this pernicious practice.
This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on a day which has Marana yogam for the full day. So beware, if you buy gold on this inauspicious day you will not live to enjoy your gold and diamond jewellery.
