Hi , We visited New Zealand and Australia last christmas (Dec '2006) . I would suggest Air New Zealand. Our destination was Sydney , but we stopped at Auckland , for 5 days and flew back via the same route. Our total vacation days was about 15 days, turned out to be a litttle expensive but it was well worth it. Let me know if you need more details. - Jyothsna

See if you can fly Air Newzealand to Sydney or Melbourne. You will likely get a free break of journey in NZ for upto several weeks. No need to buy separate tickets to two countries.
They both are very close to each other so the price difference may not be much...but in terms of appeal as a tourist destination, New Zealand is far better than Australia. More laid back, more rustic and more scenic.
