T20 - A batsman's game...or is it ?

started by Mr. T 5 mnths ago
All those purists(self included) who thought T20 is an one sided affair can now taste their foot in their mouth. True the odds are loaded against the bowlers, but when it comes to the bare details,

A bowler who matains is line and length is difficult to hit in any format of the game.

the bowler gets one good delivery and if he messes it up he can go back to his lineup and try again...sure the no of time he can try is limited but still he gets that second chance, for a batsman there is only one chance, if he fails there is no second chance.

So all it takes is one match to jump to this conclusion :)   while teams are scoring 160 + runs in majority of the matches,  comeback and tell me when the runrate is consistently around 6 runs per over then i will buy your theory...  until then there's no question of foot or mouth.

Bowlers are throwing up figures which are better than even ODI performances....

I think T20 is forcing more disciplined, line & length, few extras (there hasnt been too many free hit no-balls in this tournament) bowling.  Expect much better bowling in ODI & Test cricket from now on... specially from those bowlers who are also playing T20 cricket.

Purists...were too early to pass judgements on bowlers (as always).

RS,

Are you happy that Mumbai is winning thanks to few oldies or are you sad that superstar is yet to earn his money on thefield?

Are you envious that these superstars & icons are making millions ??? is the money bugging you or is it their form ????

Or is plain envy that Deccan Chargers & Bangalore Royal Challengers have lost this season & Mumbai Indians are looking good (possibly a chance of making it to the final four)

Sachin did get 4 catches today, plus some brilliant captaincy today...thats value too... unless you think that only scoring fours & sixes counts in cricket.

Just like any professional job.. the experienced get paid the most..  & over a period of time... the younger/lesser experienced executives/professionals come in apr with the experienced executives/professionals. This is professional cricket... experience counts , specially in the initial stages...couple of years down the line when this game becomes more popualr... the players will get assessed again on their strengths, form, fitness in the T20 format..& then th deserving ones will continued to be paid higehr & the lesser performers will get auctioned to a respectable value...but till that time, keep your patience & stop being a sore pessimist.

Yes, I am worried about the seniors  form & performance in T20 because  I want them to succeed in this format of cricket too like they ruled in ODIs & Tests....but like I have said earlier... give them time. Afterall these people have played 15-18 plus years of cricket & they will find it most difficult to break away from their regular style & way of batting & adopt quickly to the T20 format.... wheareas it is easier for younger players to adapt to this format, since most of them have really been groomed in this shorter versions of cricket more than longer versions.  Jayasuriya adapted with some initial hassles... Sourav Ganguly is looking okay..(his bowling adds value) ... It is important that the seniors add value to any match..even if they fail in batting they need to do something else on the field... at this stage..Sachin , Dravid & laxman have just their captaincy & fielding as their second options if they fail as batsmen. Today Sachin added value as fielder & Captain.

Couple of days back I had posted Dileep Premachandran's article... good article.....

Twenty20 though is a very different game. Sourav Ganguly has shown signs of getting to grips with it, but other titans of the one-day game, like Ricky Ponting and Herschelle Gibbs, have struggled to impose themselves in the frenetic atmosphere.

Those who operate within a more classical framework, like Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis, have struggled. Not only have they struggled to go over the top, but even the helter-skelter singles and twos have proved beyond them.

The skills (of Sachin ) are not in doubt, but his performances as the tournament nears its business end will come in for minute scrutiny. Warne can concede 27 in an over, and put it behind him in time for the next game. A Tendulkar nought is quite different. The Indian media may be gentle when it comes to analysing Adam Gilchrist's stop-start season, but Tendulkar will expect no such leeway.

A couple of low scores and TV channels will wheel out the same hackneyed question: Is Tendulkar finished? If he does score, but gets out a few balls before victory is clinched, the debates will centre around how he's no finisher. In many ways, it's a lose-lose situation, but the man who has been a winner for 18 years will surely find his way.

Those who operate within a more classical framework..

R Sharma, Ghambir and Sehwag have played pretty good classical cricket. I think Dravid's problem is more mental..He looks too stressed out to me..He just need to play free, thats the only wau he can do well in this format. Perhaps giving captaincy might help him..
