in public, can't he keep it to himself or to his organization, with this kind of attitude he might turn his team into Oakland Raiders pretty soon.

On a related "Mallya-Watch" note - either Vengkatesh Prasad is no longer coach of Banglore or CricInfo's article is making a serious error (see  Cricinfo
Where I quote:

"We have conveyed our decision to the IPL council," Martin Crowe, the Bangalore coach, told Cricinfo from Chandigarh, where the rest of the team is currently staying. "The franchises are discussing the issue. A final decision will be made tomorrow. We are going to Delhi tomorrow and will probably head over to Bangalore after a night's stay in Delhi."

This says that Prasad is No longer the coach for Banglore.

P.S. Dravid did no favor to himself bagging close to $1M and then not delivering.

That probably was a typo, well you never know with an impatient owner like him at the helm.

Mallya is typical low grade capitalist who thinks he became wealthy because he is very smart.  I don't like the way he is airing his views against members of his team.  Poor Dravid is stuck with this uncivilized guy at a time when he is out of form.  I don't think Mallya understands cricket well.  He is better off to go and sell cheap beer and spend time with pom pom girls.

While Mallya is right as a franchisee owner & a businessman,  to be upset that his investment & his team isnt showing results. He is surely not here to do charity for cricket..he is here to do business. Vijay Mallya has always be outspoken & direct in his conversations...nothing fake about it.

But speaking about his grievances in public, specially when it involves one of the country's greatest cricketer, Rahul Dravid..is in bad taste plus when it involves your own baby, your own team..is something which could he could clearly avoid. He could be tough in the closed room & send his message across firmly to the team management, the captain & the team, instead of going open/public with his feelings. It is also crucial that he stands by the team & supports them when they really need him.

Sandilya, i dont think anyone in India will ever agree that his liquor is cheap... United Breweries has some of the best products.....McDowells & Kingfisher are the best brands in India..  United Breweries, Kingfisher, Kissan, Mangalore chemicals, Aventis are afterall reputed companies & brands...... no one can deny Vijay Mallya the credit for making them all into huge business successes. He is a sports enthusiast...sponsors soccer clubs in Bengal, now this cricket club, plus he is a big Formula one enthusiast...he will be responsible for introducing & promoting Formula one in India.

He is one of the very few Industrialist who really lives life in style ,.... extrovert, extravangant, & enjoys what he he is doing. ...he is like the Donald Trump of India.

Donald Trump of India.

True Mallya is a BIG shot in Indian business, because he made some right moves at the right time. However he owes it all to his dad to Vittal Mallya, who was a real brain and philonthroper, he set up a great system for Mallya to build on..I think he has given away more money than his son made..

In all this discussion,  let us not forget that Dravid and Laxman did not completely fail as batsmen. They did put up some runs for a type of arena that is not correct for them.

Both of them failed in Captaincy. Dravid failed in his picks. A decision making error. Laxman failed in the risk department where all his picks (ex; Shahid Afridi) failed to deliver.

Don't forget that the very Hyderabad chargers were dubbed as the best team after the team(s) selection, now everybody is blaming laxman (and dravid in case of benguluru) for their downfall, Laxman should be used to the scapegoat role by now (played it way  many times :)
Truthbetold3 posted Re:Mallya shooting his mouth off on 5 mnths ago

Mucho,

Laxman's team selection failure is more a player judgement issue. So he has an excuse. His team could have played like Delhi dare devils. Though bowling was considered weak even then.

However, Dravid's team selection error is a startegy error. He selected players of a tyep that were known to be failures in this form of cricket.  If they succeded, he would have been a genius. But they did not. So he deserve the criticism. Add to that his inability to inspire the young guns, come up ideas on the fly, change according to the situation, lack of bold initiatives and his recent test record all work against him.

Laxman can only be put in the same bucket only due to team's failures. He has sensible execuses. Even though when it comes to corporate honchos, execuses don't give you much time.

i see at least two lessons for all crickters playing for commercial teams:

a) Acceptance of higher salary implies comparable performance - one cannot receive $1M and perform equivalent to one who has received $250K - the $1M  player better perform around ~4X better than the $250K player.
b) Acceptance of responsibility implies acceptance of delivery - if one cannot deliver what is expected (here the expectations are clear - high ranking on the team points table then one is in breach of contract)
c) ... others may also have valuable insights on this matter - please add/commentss on leasons learned

"higher salary implies comparable performance "

Agreed. The difference could be what counts as performance.  If Performance on the field is the only criteria, then no body would have paid the top four that much money. It is well known that they are likely to do that well in this form.

Other forms of contribution are:

Top four are top draws in Indian cricket. BCCI wanted to keep them in the fold. So they made them icons and paid them more so they do not flip to ICC.  In other words, when BCCI recogmnixed that they can milk cricket's popularity to the nth degree,  they knew they have to pay the top four for the past glory.

In US, some of the veterans get paid top dollars for short cameo contributions. Similarly a Paul Newman may get paid enormous money for a short role in a Hollywood movie for his draw rather than for acting talent(which is not bad either).

Top four were also expected to captain their teams and contribute as leaders of their respective teams. If they fail,  one can only say it is a good place to start.

IPL is new league and will see dramatic changes by next year with players like Marsh, Gambhir in greater demand than Dravid because free market will take over.
