Advantage of opening with Karthik is that we can play 5 full-time bowlers, however, that would be doing injustice to in-form Gambhir, also the lack of all rounder (Irfan), and considering below par batting peformance in the tour match, it might be wise to include Gambhir and hope that Sehwag/Ganguly combo will suffice , and share the 5th bowler duty.

Gambhir is the in-form batsman ( whether it is in ODIs, T20s) plus he has specifically been taken in place of opener , Wasim Jaffer so it makes sense to let him open. If you arent gonna use Gambhir as opener, then better have Rohit Sharma down the order instead of Gambhir.
Karthik hasnt really been the in-form batsman..except for one innings in IPL & the last practice match in Srilanka...so it isnt worth experimenting with him again in the opening spot.

Gambhir is on Nth trial....and I still think this dude is not a Test material. In test matches, the bowlers have the time to size up a batsman and force him to commit a blunder. Actually the batsmen are the hunted in tests - and Gambhir will be naked infront of these bowlers.
Expect this guy to fizzle out. I will go with Karthik - the guy who has proved he can play well in tests.

I think this is his 1st call back as far as test matches are concerned, I think he will do fine in SL & sub-continental tracks, but playing on the tracks abroad is a different story altogether, I think (at best) he is as good as Jaffer in that aspect.
One thing i have see gambhir do is learn from his mistakes, agreed at this present time he is not really upto par in a test situation, but hopefully in due course of time he should learn to be good at it.

Bhajji reminds me of Venkatpati Raju who also screwed a brilliant career indulging in booze & parties. The others being Kambli (a batsman)..& Sadanand Bevda Vishwanath (the keeper)... Vishwanath was a regular in Bangalore pubs...

>>> i want to dump bhajji not because i think he is prone to drunkenness but because i think he is fundamentally unimaginative as a frontline attacking bowler. his bad attitude is only a secondary reason for dumping him, but i want to get rid of him because he is an overhyped, underperforming non-talent. surely we have better options.

>>> i had the opportunity to watch the great indian finger spinners -- messers bedi, prasanna, and venkat in the twilight of their careers. these were men who thought deeply about the game, had a game plan to outhink and outwit the leading batsmen of their times and were not afraid to take risks. bedi and prasanna and venkat to a lesser extent were the quintessential fingerspinners who didn't need the doosra or any such mystery deliveries to outsmart the guy at the other end - they relied on the traditional weapons available to any spinner - flight, loop, drift, and the massive torque they would impart to the cherry - things that seem to be completely unknown to poor clueless bhajji. yes he has taken more wickets than them all, but these fellows also played fewer games.
>>> bhajji would benefit from learning for a few months at the feet of the greatest traditional finger spinner playing the game today - monty panesar.

Even Siva in that list? Hmn.. now it's getting interesting. I have seen Kambli after booze becoming fat like a bear. Siva must be from a different school of booze/drugs.

I was in awe of Sadanand Vishwanath's keeping during that famous Benson & Hedges series which India won in Australia ... he was probably one of those rare ones in those days who stood up close to the stumps for a fast bowler.
But that victory ruined him..he couldnt handle the success & glory & ruined himself in booze. My Bangalore friends used to say..he wa popular in Pub circles for being the most drunk man walking out out Bangalore Pubs.
Glad to hear that he resurrected his life with help from the board, and the likes of Brijesh Patel. Thank you Sreeram veera for doing such a nice article on one of the most naturally talented but forgotten cricketers.

If Indian team needs a couple of psychos to intimidate opponents, Bhajji & Sreesanth should be selected as extra players. Put them in silly point when hot guys like Symonds are at the crease.

Bhajji has done good in 2008..he back in form & is getting wickets.... in last 5 matches he has 24 wickets with an eco rate of 2.93..which isnt bad at all....
But his conduct on & off field are sure questionable.

>>> if he can do something else besides spear the ball in flat, i'd like to know. i've never known him use the standard tools in a finger spinner's armory -- loop, flight, and drift. he never turns the ball even on subcontinental crumblers. a waste of space. can him, can him now.
