Exhibiitons impress me too, they are nice for photo ops. So which part of UK did the MP offer to lay the foundation stone for Ealam?

Uppili posted Re:Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
Are you supporting the Eaalam Tamil independence ?  Tamil Nadu Tamil independence ? Tamil nadu - Ealam merger into an independent country ?

your support for TN independence and also Ealam independence, and supporting Ealam terrorists to full extent while denying ealam-TN merger into a new country all contradictory.

Please clarify...clearly and unequivocally.

I am impressed by the fact that UK parliamentarians are impressed and posed for pics.
Kayal Vizhi posted Re:Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
Unlike Hindian politicians, British politicians do not hate Tamils. That is the principal difference.

Learn from history Kayal.

Tamils in Sri Lanka are screwed mainly because of these cunning British politicians. They heavily preferred Tamils in early part of 20th century and because of that Tamils are disliked & kicked around today by Sinhalese people after British left.

Yet another British screw-up and alas.. people learnt from history.
Uppili posted Re:(SL Tamil history) Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
Here is a clarification of the SL tamil history... google and find more details yourself...

The Tamils in the northern regions inhabited that island for 2000+ years... the Sinhalese are Oriya/Bengali descendants who came to SL much later.. The war is between these 2 groups... sure the Brits preferred the tamils as they were ready to learn English and serve as middle men for Brits and the sinhalese.

Now, the Brits also took Indians (against mostly tamils from Madras) to SL (and to Malaysia, West Indies, Fiji (mostly Telugus from Madras), South Africa (Tamilians to a large extent).  The Tamilians taken to SL worked in the CENTRAL region on Tea plantations. This  is a much smaller population are not recognized by SL. These are the STATELESS persons. This Brit-group has no voting rights and hence not a threat to the Sinhalese. Hence, the sinhalese dont bother them much as they are scattered and live on daily wages on plantations.  The BRITS screwed up THIS group who have no rights anywhere.

The Tamil - sinhala war is an older one for the supremacy of the island that began with the immigration of Sinhalese some 1500 years ago. Even the Tamil kings Chola and Pandya waged wars with the Lankan sinhalese.  In otehr words....this is a MUCH older NI-SI war waged in the garb of Aryan (Sinhalese) - and Dravidians (Tamils) - Ironically in SL the northerners are Tamilians and Southerners are Sinhalese..

Thanks for the lecture. I learnt something new today about Aryan/Dravidian conflict in Sri Lanka. There is also another version of the same involving Buddhist & Hindu/Christian conflict.

Oriya background makes sense as the scripts are closer.
Oriya:

Sinhalese:

Sinhalese also looks closer to Kannada or Telugu scripts. Their apearance & names (ending with vowels, mostly a) also bring closer connection to Kannada folks.

why didnt uttarpradesh brahmins get to that place? is it because they as brahmins were forbidden to cross the seas?

oh please. that argument of blaming british occupation for all the ills plaguing 3rd world colonies is so passe'. it's more often than not just an excuse to absolve the 'native rulers' of all responsibility towards good governance.

>>> what screwed up reasoning! tamils in sri lanka, like tamils in india benefited from the british rule because of their higher levels of education, and knowledge of english. they were preferred for a reason. it is human nature to make use of an opportunity to improve one's lot in life when it presents itself. it isn't that the brits screwed up. they did what was best for their administration and recruited the best talent available. the blame for the current mess lies entirely with the sinhalese government and the violent LTTE, not with the brits.
tejasvee posted Re:Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
You can't give Brits a clean chit.

-  Why do you think Sihalese started hating Tamils in the mid 20th century?
- How come Tamils were in such disproportionately higher percentage in civil services? A lot of them were imported from India right? Do you really believe that Tamils were so much more 'talented' compared to Sinhalese?
- Have you heard of other British 'preferences' in the subcontinent like 'martial castes' for army, 'brahmin castes' for administration etc.?

"Do you really believe that Tamils were so much more 'talented' compared to Sinhalese?"

>>> the ones who were brought in from india were certainly better educated in english than the local sinhalese population. so yes in that sense they were more talented. they were brought in because they served the british needs for civil servants and administrators better than the sinhalese who at the time were not as well-educated in english.
tejasvee posted Re:Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
OK. For a minute, let's buy your argument that Tamils were brought in from India as they were 'better' for the admin jobs.

You have a parallel to this in India too. Gurkhas were preferred by British as dependable & loyal military men. They were imported to India from Nepal. That trend continues even today 6 decades after British left. As far as I know, India is the only country that recruits foreign citizen in it's army for a stipulated term  (Gurkha regiment).

How come Tamils were hated so much by Sinhalese but Gurkhas are not hated by general Indians? Obviously there are clear similarities right?
MaxEntropy_Man posted Re:Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
>>> i am not sure i understand your question, there is a gurkha regiment in the british army too. lots of foreigners serve in the american defense forces too.

>>> you ask why the tamils are so hated by the sinhalese and not the gurkhas by the indians. i don't know. because the tamils aren't gurkhas and indians aren't sinhalese maybe? because the political scenarios are totally different? because gurkhas never held positions of power in the government in india, but lots of tamils  in SL did maybe?

>>> i don't understand your subsequent analogies and questions. you made a statement blaming the brits for recruiting tamils and fomenting hatred and i showed you how ridiculous your reasoning was. that is all.
tejasvee posted Re:Tamil eelam exhibition impresses UK parliamentarians on 2 mnths ago
OK. If you don't want to see the analogy between Tamils in SL and Gurkhas in India, let' keep that also aside.

Getting back to the original statement.

British preferred Tamils mainly because of English education. It's a fact that during mid 20th century, Tamils enjoyed a disproportionately higher academic and civil services position in SL, compared to their population %. Sinhalese saw this as a cunning discrimination as British were setting up education in mostly Tamil areas.

Reference: http://www.american.edu/TED/ice/lanka-conflict.htm

So naturally, a Sinhalese backlash began later when British left. Today's 2008 folks not realizing this important British policy that is one of the major causes of SL conflict, is a tragedy.
