the jaws of death

w is courageous and capable. she's been in india for over a year now, to be closer to her 84-year-old father, my f-i-l, an all-round splendid guy. she's not in coonoor where my p-i-l live, but planning and managing architectural works in another city from where she can get to coonoor nearly overnight. two months ago, f wrote to me, saying that he's considered a prime candidate for a stroke.

last night, w transported f by ambulance from coonoor to coimbatore for diagnostic tests after he appeared to have suffered either a minor stroke or a heart attack. the drive down the hills to the plains via the hairpin bends was difficult; the paramedic (or was it a doctor?) was said to be very good; they stopped and gave f a shot (injection) (of a drug to thin the blood?). w emailed me from the ambulance using her blackberry. they are now at a good hospital in c'batore, under good care.

earlier, f had first been admitted to the icu of a hospital in coonoor (not the military one in wellington), but neither it nor wellington have as much medical expertise as the hospital in c'batore.

manekshah's death may have been a blow to f. w who was then a student of architecture, had helped mrs. m modify their newly-acquired house in coonoor when they first arrived there. coonoor is a smallish, quaint place, and everyone knows one another. f may be the oldest well-known resident of coonoor now, and my p-i-l, possibly the longest residents of the place.

i'm keeping s and d - one on each coast of the u.s. - informed. d is scheduled to be in india later, both to spend time with w and her - d's - only grandparents, and to visit the local (indian) researchers working for the economics department she'll be joining in cambridge in a few months. i'm awfully glad w is with f in his hour of need.

thank you, muchocricket, rs-k, max, uppili, peacegazer, and carvaka, for your good wishes and expressions of concern. uppili is quite right about what we lose by being far away. w, however, took important steps at the right time to go and live in india. s and d had also encouraged her to do that. i am proud of her, and glad for her and my p-i-l.

f is feeling (superficially) better now, but is still in the icu because his kidney is not functioning well. w emailed me from the hospital room, but i shall not burden anyone with further details. we don't yet know what the prognosis is. i may make one more post about this.

i hope you all enjoy the long weekend.

Glad to see you being a good support to your wife in these times. Are you going to visit them soon?
