RAY: The kernel of this puzzler was sent in by a fellow named Butch Guest. He gave me permission to rewrite it.
Well, it's been a well-kept secret, but there exists a Car Talk Social Club which has 500 members in it now. We used to have 5,000 but we've had a little problem attracting members lately. And that 500 includes all of our friends and family members and a few ex-wives.
For our upcoming celebration this year we are going to have our Hawaiian Luau Lambada and Lasagna Extravangaza. We decided that for new members (those who had been members for less than a year), in order to get them to attend, we would offer tickets at a discount --14 dollars a ticket. But long-term members would be charged 20 dollars each for their tickets. Not surprisingly all the new members buy the 14-dollar tickets. But only 70-percent of the long-term members fork over the 20 bucks. Cheapskates!
Now here's the deal. You don't know how many new members or long-term members there are. I just said we had 500 overall members. But you do know that 70-percent of the old members showed up, 30-percent of the old members didn't show up, and all of the new members showed up.
The question is how much money did we collect?Cartalk puzzle of the week - Super simple
how fortunate that exactly 70% of the old members turned up!
i like the magliozzis' jokes about ex-wives. i think it's tom who's on wife no. 3. isn't he the older, bearded one?
saw a book you'll like, by the onion. it's called "our dumb world" or smthng like that. glossy. about two pages per country. interesting "facts." totally irreverent, as expected. you should read their description of india! our nationalists wouldn't recover from it.

Your answer is correct. I think Tom is older.
About Our dumb world, I want to buy that book. Some of them are extremely funny. Next time when I visit a small business bookstore will definitely buy it.

do you mean the last puzzle you posted? about the new car and the old car, and how the man drove both home?
i think the distance from the dealer's lot to his home was 21 miles. in that case, he walked 21 miles, and drove 42 miles. it's the same as his driving the new car 21 miles to his home, walking back the 21 miles to the dealer's lot, then driving the 21 miles home in his old car.

Carvaka solved last week's puzzle. Nobody solved it this week's.
Nope! You are incorrect about the the distance he drove. You forgot that he drove his old car both ways. He drove 63(41 old+21 new car) and walked 21 miles.
i'll bite.
if n = no. of new members and d = no. of old members, total collection =
14n + 0.7*20d = 14n + 14d = 14(n + d) = 14*500 = 7,000.
