need advice: should i buy a car?

started by JhakaasDesi 6 mnths ago
Hi friends,
I'm new to this forum and knowing that there may be a few experienced and well meaning people here, would appreciate some advice.

I have been in the US for about a year now and based in Colorado. I just finished a project and am looking for a new one. I am thinking of buying a car but a few friends are advising me to hold it till I get a new project and shift - their idea is that in the event I move to a place like New York, maintaining a car(insurance + parking) is just too expensive considering the good public transport there.

Even if I go to NYC i just wont be staying there for more than 6 months.

My feeling is that car is a must in the US and I need to get one since the chances of me getting a proj in NY or NJ or DC is probabilistically slim.

Would appreciate some advice on this front from those who know well the lay of this land.

Best,
Nitesh

Your will be in my backyard!   Nitesh don't buy the car yet.

If you will be working in NY City then your car - will be that SPOUSE u really want ot get rid of - but simply WON'T be able to do so once "MARRIED".

You will find WALKING Theraputic in NY CITY - I just love it.

If you will be living in NJ - then make friends with someone in NJ - to take you along for grocery shopping n stuff.

DOn't buy it UNLESS you are trying to impress girls - and for that you will need a luxury car not a grocery pick up type ;-)

Your friends are right. Wait till you get your next project. Many old cities like DC/NYC/Boston/Chicago etc  have rail + bus services. Those are quite convenient and cars are a hassles (high insurance + parking problems). If it is West coast, then you can buy a good used car  say $3,000 to 5,000.

Good luck.

Thanks Blade Runner, Rajee and Uppili :-)

I do use public transport but felt a car would be more convenient so I just wanted to know the worst case scenario when you end up with a car in a city that may need one. Even if I were to work in NY I would be staying in NJ anyway.

Wont you find car a necessity for weekend shopping, library visits, eatouts in NJ?

why not rent a house within one KM radius of your work area? May be a little xpensive but save you the parking blues. Also take a car on rental for week end ventures or use public transport. In case you are so pissed about it then do not go for USED ONES--they will give you a lot of problems and make a big HOLE in your pocket--there are no easy SADAK CHHAP MECHANICS repairing cars there. I suggest you stay away from it till you get a permanent job--currently you seem to be on CONTRACT JOB---which is a bit risky thing to go for a car on loan. Anyway--decision yours. look at your pocket, type of job, area of work and facilities there---then make a decision. rajee

I am not generally well meaning but I can still give some advice - you will never find parking in NYC. A car is not that useful in the city. I would suggest you wait till you know where your next project is.

Parking problem in NYC is in class by itself. Car is a bad idea.
DC - you can reach downtown by metro, car is a good idea.
NJ dont know- i think you need a car.
