I'm too lazy to click on that link and read. How many lbs are you planning to lift?

By the way, weight lifting is done by yourself. Do not use your husband or boyfriend to lift the weights. That does not count as physical exercise.

you forgot to add
you may not use your bf or husband as weight either  ..  there are other ways to engage him in exercise

BladeRunner posted Re:who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago

They can be used as weights. Especially husbands. Since they would have lost almost all signs of intelligent life after the marriage

Hi,
You should be careful.  There is nothing wrong in it but the condition of your body is more important.  Check your fitness regime before you start. All the best.

BittuZing posted Re:who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago
Some weight training is always good but listen, if you're already feeling good and looking good, don't change a thing. I don't care about experts and their opinions. I'm in control of my own body and if I feel A-OK, then I know best. Unless I'm psycho or something.

All suck big time.

I dozed off in the train today, with my face to my left. Suddenly I open my eyes to stare closely at some other girl's face. She was sitting next to me and had also dozed off with her face to her right. So we were like 2 inches from each other. Got up with a jolt, and could not sleep the rest of the way. So, sleepy right now. Will retire early I guess.

I did. Weights twice a week. While my trainer insisted that free weights help you get results faster, I wasn't very comfortable using them. Machines worked just fine. Make sure you drink some lemon juice after your work out to avoid sore muscles:-)

Pls provide scientific evidence. "My mama told me so" aint gonna cut it.

Uppili posted Re:who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago
Did the trainer - related to Dr. Urine ?

Of course, Dr. Urine will suggest that you drink something else.....

But, both might be just as useful in tackling muscle soreness....

BTW, ask the trainer if Lime, orange, grapefruit will be as good as lemon...

ok, I was told by this desi uncle who used to be a cricket player that they used to drink salt water after every training session to replenish fluids.

Just wondering if lemon juice is along the same line?
  Propagandhi12 posted Re:who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago
1. criket is barely a sport.
2. ppl playing in sun usually sweat so they drink fluids with salt and sugar to replenish the lost salt. it has nothing to do with lactic acid buildup in muscles that manifests as muscle fatigue/failure. the soreness you feel day after lifting weights is a result of muscle fibers tearing when pushed to exhaustion and not lactic acid buildup. if anything taking anti inflammatories such as citric acid will slow the recovery of muscles from strenuous workout. that's what I know. best for recovery is pure whey protein isolates taken within half hour of lifting weights.

I weight train once to two times a week,  I usually weight train with free weights and not on the machines doing weights where I can usually lift between a max of 8 - 12 reps. If it gets to 12 reps easily then you add enough weight to get you back to a max of 8 reps.   I have a personal trainer and with the trainer occasionally we do the heavier weights where you can only do a max of 5 reps of each.  You tend to do 3-5 sets each exercise.

A lot of the weight training is often doing large functional movements with weights such as squats, lunges, dead lifts, chest press etc. Other good exercises that need no additional weights and perhaps even some assistance are pressups and pull ups.

If you have not lifted weights and want to get to the 8-12 reps it might be worth getting one of the trainers to set you an initial program and take you through it. That way they watch your form and monitor the weights and can advise you on where your weight range lies.  Once you get on to the heavier weights you need to know your comfort levels as you have to pick them up and put them away.

Personally I do not work hard enough to always keep increasing the weights I lift but I do make sure that I always stay within that 8-12 zone and do not lift too light a weight.

I weight train once to two times a week. -- gowser.

the correct sentence is:

"I weight train once or twice a week" or

"I weight train one or two times a week."

the word "to" is unnecessary when there are only two possibilities; however, it IS necessary in the following sentence, unless one uses "between...and":

"I weight train one to three times a week."

In my view...lifting weights is not a good idea for women.
Much of it is hype and unrealistic (to be done on a regular basis).

Just basic- common sense methods of weight control (watcting diet,  exercise (running, walking, aerobic) on a consistent  basis is all that is needed.

*in this country- more people suffer from exercise-related injuries (back ache, leg ache...you name it ache)...like no other place! (so many of these beautiful looking people in the gyms take prescription drugs for pain like addicts..it is unbelievable!)

Weight lifting is not a must to be physically fit. However, it does help you to tone your body. With weight lifting/training, I can significantly reduce the amount of time of my workouts. I think weight training is different from weight lifting. If a woman wants to look like one of those very muscular body builders, than she has to lift weight. But weight training involves working out with small weights (5-10lbs). Have you seen 'The Firm' informercial? This program entails aerobics and weight training.
You mentioned exercise related injuries. These injuries occur due to improper use of the equipment. Also, a lot of people do not have patience to build up their bodies gradually. When they get greedy and try to fulfill their objectives quickly, they get hurt. One has to know his/her limitation.

gowser posted Re: {Maria} Who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago
actually I disagree.  Lifting weights is very useful in being physically fit possibly more useful then being able to run long distances.  Part of being physically fit is maintaining strength and being able to lift and move things safely and easily.  Lifting weights is the only way to maintain muscle mass once you are out of your 20s.  muscle mass keeps ones metabolism high. This can only be a good thing.  Lifting too little weight is not helpful as you have to provide some strain to the muscles to keep them working.  The 8-12 rep rule is one of the best.  Keeps time spent on workouts down as you see gains pretty quickly.
Amerasian posted Re: {gowser} Who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago
Gowser, check out this website: http://www.firmdirect.com/firm/ecs/main/index.html

Notice the weights on their home page, they are pretty small. Since the thread is about weightlifting for women, I was specifically talking about that topic. I would strongly recommend weight lifting/training for all men. However, everybody who trains with weights should learn to do it safely. Have you seen lady body builders on TV? Don't you think they are too muscular to be feminine? They look more like men.
gowser posted Re: {gowser} Who amongst u ... on 3 mnths ago

The women in the add lift more weights than the products they are advertising.  No one is talking about the body builder levels there are many women who weight train in a gym and lift more than that.  The effectiveness comes from keeping the weight level so you do 8-12 reps.

Ameriasian, those women are f*ed up!

Impy's talking about weight training at the gym. She's not going to be taking pills, diuretics, drinking concoctions, etc.

There's no way Impy's going to be in that state unless she gives up her day job, family, and weekends activities.

There are lots of women working the weights at the gym, and they're quite healthy and feminine. (Actually too feminine if you ask me ;-) To avoid injuries, you have to ask trainers how to do certain exercises. (Most gyms give complimentary training session).

Harem (Turkish from Arab ?aram, forbidden) refers to the sphere of women in a usually polygynous household and their quarters enclosed and forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and came to the Western world via the Ottoman Empire. In more modern usage, it may also denote a number of women followers of a man.
