pain free running

any serious runners here? i basically run 6 miles three times a week on trails with ups and downs, some quite challenging -- think the second and third legs of the boston marathon; that level of difficulty. on days i don't run, i've been doing pushups -- 100 in increments of 25. it helps me stay in shape and in summer i run outside and it's pretty much all the exercise i do. no weight training etc. i used to suffer from shin pains until i got fitted for shoes at a specialist running store and the pain disappeared. i've been gradually able to increase my regular running distance from 2 miles to 6 miles over a year and a half and finish it these days with nearly no difficulty to moderate exhaustion some days. the problem is when i try to increase the distance even by half a mile -- the shin pain returns in full force and i hurt like hell and can't run for a week. i've trid icing my shins down, dunking my leg in frigid water; nothing helps. i'd really like to go all out and run the half-marathon. i've talked to my doctor and he doesn't have much to offer besides advising modest increases in distance and icing. any pointers?

I am also suffering from pain in my legs knee downwards.  Even ordinary walking is painful.  Allopathetic medicne does not have any cure for this condition.  Being a Keralite Brahmin Pattar, I turned to Ayurveda, and now I am massaging my legs with this concoction, hoping for a permanent cure.

Equal quantities of Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala  Preparations (200 ml. each)

1.     Valiya Narayana Tailam   Rs.  102./-

2.     Karpuradi Tailam               Rs.     58/-

3.     Prabhanjana Vimardanam Kuzhambu   Rs. 64/-

Pre mix these three medicated oils, in a one liter pet bottle, keeping it over night, and retransferring it to the original 200 ml bottles, after thoroughly shaking the pet bottle several times. Close the bottles air tight, otherwise the Karpuram in the Karpuradi Tailam will evaporate.

One hour prior to taking a bath, either in the morning or in the evening, apply this oil, on your legs, where you feel the pain, and take a warm water bath.  Kuzhambu is sticky, and it is better to leave a trace of this mix on your shins.  It will be absorbed into your system, and in due course of time you will be hopefully free of pain.

In all cases, Ayurveda insists that the affected parts, if they are massaged with medicated oils, be given adequate rest, so that the nerves get rejuvenated.

There are absolutely no side effects.

Max -

Have you tried increasing the distance to 7 miles on a treadmill or flat track?

First ensure you don't have a stress fracture.
Secondly ensure 100% that there is no shin splint, at any level.
Keep away from pain killers. Personally I never believe in pain killer induced exercise.
Since you have already worked on the shoe part, check out a physio therapist to get advanced shin muscle conditioning exercises. Toe flexes are good, but there could be advanced ones. Overall it seems like conditioning problem.

Why not start with large number of situps to ensure there is nothing wrong with knees?

PS: It's good to see a bunch of runners in this forum. I love running and always been an outdoor runner.

Max,

Have checked for family history of back problems or knee problems going back 2 or 3 generations as some times problems skip a generation or two.  Back problems also show up as knee problems.

Since you are a runner for a long time,  you have a natural resistance to some level of pain.  Since knee is joint,  you may want to pay extra attention to that.

6 miles thrice a week , while not extraordinary, is above ordinary.  Seeking specialist advice( to complement Sulekha CH forum advice)  is desirable.

For Biking I follow the sequence,

Short term relief

(a) Shoes, accessories

(b) Podiatrist

Most probably problems in feet were the result of other problems. So for medium term,

(c) Strength training the thigh muscles, calf muscles, knee joint flexing  - Exercise coach one or two hours

For long term and for real advice

(d) Sports medicine

REST...and lots of painkillers.. it sux.. but that helped me a lot..

I trained for a half marathon because all the young uns in our dept were doing it.. after a couple of weeks my left knee started killing me... I couldn't climb up or down the stairs. I rested completely for a month or so and slowly started back up...

Needless to say I never completed the half marathon because of all this.... but that one year of training was indeed great..

Nowadays I have accepted the fact that my knee will never allow me to pound the pavement and started running on treadmills..believe me It was very very hard fact to accept.

you talk as if you are my other handle. the exact same problem with me, too. i would run for 50-55 minutes on alternate days not very long ago. but then my left knee started giving in. i have completely stopped working out ever since. i cannot see any of my three toes while i am bathing as a result of that. matter of time before i get back to working out like a nigger.

treadmills are fine man... but I do get bored running on them...

what.. you have three toes wonly. :)

i havent reached your stage yet...I bike a lot too..but all the riding might affect my cojones...what to do ..life is a biatch.

go to a podiatrist.. my friend is one and I'm surprised to hear from her how many pains are attributed to your feet. That's good tho that you got special shoes for running.

carvaka posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago
My wife has been dealing with knee problems ever since she ran with me once last year. Her mistake was that she ran for a mile or so after her knee started hurting. Running with hurting legs is fine in one's teens and twenties (perhaps) but strict no-no after you cross 30. While running the half marathon is a nice goal, it is an artificial goal for which I wouldn't push my body beyond its limit. If your goal is remain fit, keep running the 6 miles and you will do great.

What is the ultimate goal Max?  Six miles a few times a week is a lot!
You are not a  human running machine:)

Seriously,I suppose you need to find out...what the reason for the pain is- is it originating from the tendons, bones, periosteum etc..so an orthopedic evaluation may help.

An arch support or shock-absorbing insole is highly recommended. Also get properly fitted with the right shoes. If unsure, a podiatrist, kinesiologist or sports physiotherapist can help you choose.

Massages to release the tight muscle areas..

A rehabilitation program which includes stretching your tight muscles, strengthening of muscles to correct muscle imbalance and correction of any abnormality in your running gait..can be helpful.

>>> i am not sure what the ultimate goal is. the near-term goal is successful completion of a half-marathon. i did try one of those massage machines at the mall one weekend evening after a particularly painful run. it hurt a lot, but it felt like i got some relief. i'll try it out a few more times before i shell out $700. i did get fitted with the right shoes. that's what has allowed me to increase my distance. i had lousy shoes before. i'll look for the shock-absorbing insoles in the same store. thanks. you're right, i should probably go to a sports specialist instead of the internist that i go to.

Vivek posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago

I run 7-8 miles in a stretch and will be increasing the distance soon, but I have been getting bad knee pains lately. Do you think the knee pain is due to shoes, or running style.

I think shin pains is due to lack of sufficient warm up. I used to get those in the begining, but then I started spending 10-15 minutes only for warmups and stretching exercise, just rotating my ankles.

Mr. T posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago
Dude, knee pain could be anything....u might want to try those exercises that strength the knee joints and muscles and see if that helps.

Yeah warmups is one thing i have been negelecting big time..is going to bite me big time one day.
Vivek posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago
My 'foot' doctor "suggested" doing some exercises to make the thighs stronger. He asked me to do some weight pushing by legs. A marathoner thought that its becasuse of wrong shoes. I tend to agree the marathoner.

abeee.i can run but at very slow speeds, part beacause i get depressed while running and part ebcause my basic nature is languid. but do not run much,it is bull shit you will mess up your joints

some tips

run only on mudded or unpaved trails hard  surfaces are bad for joints..
*try to run with asexy looking woman, that takes care of depression while running if you get any..
*try nude thai massage for your leg pain

U and me dude...my goal is to run the half marathon too. 9 miles is the most I have managed so far, that too only once. I am able to do 7.5 miles consistently. Luckily no shin problem for me for so far. I have a different problem though..with my shoes...my laces get undone atleast once in this attempt, are they are they locks that one can get to keep them in place..or should i buy a strapped shoe !!!!?

Doofus_Maximus posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago
it annoys the crap outta me when my laces come undone while I am running.. it almost ruins that day..i havent found a solution though.. other than that I tie it as tight as I can and hope for the best.
Mr. T posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago
Tell me about it !!!!!

I hate to see my laces come undone especially when i am in the fag end of my run. Jesus it is a big ask to make myself to run again at that juncture.
Maria S posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago

What does Jesus have to do with shoe laces? Is there some kind of fun in using His name unnecessarily?

you're gettin old. Your doctor may WANT to tell you to give up running and take up swimming instead, but that's not a PC thing to say, so he won't. You need to do this yourself. Stop running and take up swimming, biking, spinning, elliptical....anything that doesn't stress your old bones and joints.

runners world magazine usually has some good articles

http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-290--529-1-3X6-3,00.html

They do recommend pretty full on rest until the shins have healed probably more rest than you give yourself now.

Big wuss at a total of 100 press-ups.

gowser posted Re:pain free running on 1 month ago
perhaps you have not let your shins heal fully hence nothing has worked.  you might have to really rest it out for a month or couple of months and see.

The mere thought of running cause my shins and knees to ache - I've found relief by avoiding such thoughts. And if I feel the need for that runners' high, I simply pour myself a drink.
