meaning of telugu word

started by DesiGult 7 mnths ago
I hope some fellow gults can help me out on this.

What is the meaning of the telugu word "phalithamu"? I am trying to use this word formally and want to make sure I am using it correctly. Can it be used to mean "fruits" of an action instead of  just "result" of an action?

If someone knows a better place to post this, please let me know.

Thanks.

Phalitamu : when used as verb
1 to be fruitful, bear fruit, come to bearing, fructify. 2 (of a vow, desire) to be fulfilled. 3 (of a dream) to come true.

when used as noun:

result, consequence, effect, outcome

Hi DesiGult;

The meaning of "phalithamu" is just "result" . it need not necessarly a "good result" or "the positive result that one anticipates"!

it means just the "out come" . But interestingly the origin of the word "phalithamu" points to only "positive or good results" but not the bad one. But over the years the word "phalithamu" been used to mean any out come! May be the origin of the word "phala" is "fruits" but off late it simply mean just the "results"

hi indu,
as far as i remember it is close to "result" or "benefit" : egs..."inka emi phalithamu ledu, enduku alaa baada padataavu". It is only my guess; i suppose one can use with regards to KARMA and its RESULTS too. I have been not much of help, just wanted to take a shot at it.

good luck

Hi Maria

I do not know the meaning of fellow gult but  being a Telugu girl I can tell you that the meaning of Phalithamu is  results.

Not the fruits of an action.

I think it is the perspective in which you see the word. It means both. The results and fruits of action.

When do you get results?  By doing something right? So whatever you do you get the fruits thereof that is implying the result of your action - that is the meaning of Phalitamu.

Cheers !

Thanks Indophile and Vaidyanathan. That cleared my doubts.

Indophile posted Re:meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago

The literal meaning of "phalitamu" is "ripened." But the meaning in common usage is "success," "result," etc. For example, "kashtapaDDaa phalitam dakkaledu." Even in Sanskrit (from where Telugu borrowed the word) the "result" & "success" meanings for "phala" and "phalitam" are widely used. For example, the well-known verse in Bhagavad-Gita 2nd Chapter -
"karmaNyevaadhkaaras te, maa phaleshu kadaachana" (you only have a right to perform your duty, never in the results of your actions).

I do not know Telugu.  But  I know from my little knowledge of Sanskrit that the word PalitaM means ripened, in the  English language.  I do not know whether there are many shades of meaning, but I would be comfortable using  PalitaM as a translation for fruition. Analogously it could mean realization.

Propagandhi12 posted Re:meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
I know you're a confused hick so here it is for your edification: phalitam usually means positive result, especially when using it in formal telugu..so it can be used in place of 'fruits' of an action (which is usually a positive as well).

Positive as in:  durmaargudaa, nee dushta kaaryaala phalitam nuvvE anubhavistaav???

Amerasian posted Re: [Pro] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago

'h' after p in phalitam confused me a bit because there is no 'F' in telugu alphabets.
Thanks for your answer anyway even though it was accompanied with an insult (sooo a la FF).

Indophile posted Re: [Pro] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
Yes, there is no "F" in Telugu (in fact in no Indian language as far as I know), but the aspirated "P" or "PH" is there. The "PA-varga" has five letters - "PA" "PHA" "BA "BHA" "MA." They are called OshTyams (lip-joiners). The lips must come together to pronounce them. The "PHA" and "BHA" are aspirated versions of "PA nad "BA." Lips stay separate for every other letter in the alphabet.

Indo,
hope you are doing ok. what is the word for brother in telugu? is it anna as in thamizh? Also, it is anna for elder brother and thambi for younger brother in thamizh. What are the corresponding words in telugu?

Indophile posted Re: [Pro] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
Amerasian provided the answer. Yes, it's Anna/Annayya for elder brother, tammudu/tammu for younger brother.
Vaidyanathan Pushpagiri posted Re: [Pro] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
Indophile:

Annayya is elder brother.  But I have been taught by my teacher that for younger  brother it is thambudu  or tambudu..  Should I correct my teacher?  I am learning Telugu for professional reasons.

There is no "b" in the word for younger brother. It is "tammuDu" with the "t" sounding soft like in "tyagaraja" or "taaye tripurasundari," and the "D" sounding hard like in "doldrums."

G, I hope you don't mind me answering the Q. In thelugu, it's Anna and Thammudu

Elder sister: Akka (as in Maria-akka)
Younger sister: Chelli or chellelu

Seva posted Re: [G3] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
In Hindi & Punjabi, Chela is one of the words used for a male disciple (follower) and Cheli for a female disciple (follower).
carvaka posted Re: [G3] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
In Telugu, the word cheli is used for addressing one's (feminine) beloved. Just put it out there, in case you wanted to do an elaborate thesis that disciple means brother or sister!
Seva posted Re: [G3] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago

Thanks - I will keep it in mind and might acknowledge your contribution if I do an elaborate thesis on it.

Indophile posted Re: [G3] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
No harm done. The word for addressing beloved in Telugu is "cheli." In Hindi word for female follower the "eh" sound in the first syllable is sort of elongated. So we can write that chEli.
Truthbetold3 posted Re: [G3] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago
"cheli' is also used in telugu to mean a female friend as in "chelikatte" .

Here is an example where the word “Cheli” is used in a “love” song:

"so, u my anna or thammudu?"

As of now, neither! As I was telling Maria, you never know what could happend in the future. It would be hard to change you from chelli to sanam.

Hey! That's very nice..

But, I am/could be a Chelli/Chellelu or even *Chellam to quite a few folks here:)

M

*Do you know what Chellam means? (May be it is the same in Tamil and Telugu!)
Vaidyanathan Pushpagiri posted Re: [G3] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago

  Maria S:

Chellam in Malayalam means a Vethalapakku Petti  which carried betel leaves, arecca nut (whole) a nut cracker,  a pen knife,  Chunna, (slaked) lime  cured tobacco, dark brown in colour, some elaichi and clove.  ["His vethalai petti ( chellam) was like a small suitcase and his cardamom and clove came from Burma" - T. N. Seshagopalan  on Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar - the brilliant 20th century musician, from Tamilnadu.]

But the man was not only majestic but also magnanimous. Seshagopalan reveals, ``Once after relishing some rasam at a wedding, he gave a ring and his angavastram to the boy who served him."

Muthiah Bhagavatar certainly lived and died (June 30, 1945) like a king and has left a musical treasury of no mean merit.

Are people born great or circumstance make them great?

I think i knew that from the very famous movie  micheal madana kama raajan where kamal portrays [my personal fav] kameshwaran, a phalgat iyer character. urvashi was fabulous in that movie and she referred to the vethalai paaku petti as chella petti or chella kutti, i forget the exact usage. thanks for bringing back memories of a fabulous comedy!

Raja, are you proficient in Malayalam too? BTW, how did you communicate with your boss Shoban Babu? Since you don't know telugu, you must have talked to him in english.
Vaidyanathan Pushpagiri posted Re: [VP] meaning of telugu word on 7 mnths ago

 Amerasian :

In the initial stages, it was difficult.  He is used to speak in Telugu with all and sundry who interacted with him and I was no different.   But very soon, he realised, that he was not able to communicate with me.  Then,  he spoke to me in English.  It was such a great pleasure to hear him mouth those old fashioned precise words which even the present day British Royalty would have forgotten.  Beautifuly crafted sentences, in a measured tone, and a clipped accent, in a  soft and very mellifluous voice was his forte.

He never raised his voice to show his displeasure, but conveyed his displeasure in a manner that was reminiscent of the devine roles that he used to play in Telugu films.

He used to praise my diction, and my efforts in drafting his business contracts, which seldom needed his correction, for faulty English usage or syntax.

Incidentally, I am a Kerala Pattar (an honorific given by the predominant Nair community of Kerala)  or a Palghat Brahmin Iyer.  My poorvigham is Kumbakonam /Tanjavur.

I assume you are proficient in both Tamil and Malayalam (your native language I suppose).
I have always wondered as to why so many keralites migrate to other parts of India & middle-east; believe me or not, they even travel to african countries to find jobs and business opportunities. It's kind of sad that they are all compelled to move out of state. I blame Kerala's socialistic government for lack of progress.
My interaction with keralites in AP was with a doc and nurses working at the local christian hospital.

Mr. VP, I believe that it is both:) It takes life circumstances (when seriously tested) to reveal the inherent traits/qualities of greatness in a person!

Thanks for explaining the meaning of the word "Chellam" in Malayalam..Mr. Muthiah Bhagavathar seems like an interesting man.

Here is a cute tamizh kids' song "Azhagu Kutti Chellam"
(I am sure you know it means "Beautiful little special one".)..

Thank you.  This youngster Prithviraj  is from Kerala, and I think he has a bright future.  When I saw him in Mozhi, he impressed me a lot.  It is his companion Prakash Raj who popularised the use of the word 'Chellam' in Tamilnadu.  All comedians in all the Tamil TV channels had imitated the delivery of the word Chellam by Prakash Raj and to me it has lost its value as a dear word.
