AHMEDABAD: Atiti has gone through hell. She is just one-and-half-years old.

Atiti's grandmother, Kiran Parmar, branded the child with a hot iron to force Atiti's mother Jigisha (25) get more dowry. On May 1, Kiran grabbed a hot iron and singed the infant's arm.

The child, said doctors of a private hospital in Sola, is traumatised by the incident and may have suffered a severe emotional shock. "She cries out if anyone other than her mother comes near her," said Dr Mita Turakiya.

After the incident, Jigisha fled her in-laws' house in Naroda and took shelter at her parents' home in Sola. She lodged a complaint against her husband Rajesh and in-laws with Naroda police.

Rajesh, his father Narayan, mother Kiran and brother Sandeep have been booked under the Dowry Act and for physical and mental harassment.

When TOI contacted Naroda police on Friday evening, officials said that the four accused in the case have been arrested. "We arrested Jigisha's husband Rajesh, his mother, father and brother in the afternoon and have started questioning them," said LJ Solanki, inspector of Naroda police station.

It was in October 2005 when Jigisha got married to Rajesh, who works in a printing press in Khadia. The couple had a daughter after a year. Trouble started when Rajesh's brother got married and his wife got a hefty dowry with her. The mother-in-law would often compare the two daughters-in-law on the basis of the dowry they had got.

A couple of months back, tired of the torture, Jigisha had lodged a complaint with Naroda police, summoned the family for counselling. But her complaint only angered her in-laws, resulting in the shocking attack on the innocent infant.

I don't think it is right to point out one incident and provide such a title to story. Bad people exist in every religion and where as my undestanding goes, these people don't give a shit to the religion because they are ignorant fools.
Recently a christian man kept her daughter in captivity in the basement of his house for 24 years and fathered 7 children. It does not mean that all christians are like that. So please do not try to offend any religion.

You rightly said "Bad people exist in every religion" and Varadarajan Nambiar the Handle is one among the Sulekha contributors. You should just leave it at that.  If you started to reply to such inanities you will lose your sense of proportion, and may have to settle in a lunatic asylum very soon.  Why invite trouble?  Some people find great comfort in wallowing in human shit.  My request.  Do not climb down from your standards to those of other handles whose attitude is repugnant

LOL I agree. There are plenty of Hindu mothers who sacrifice all for their kids. I know some who work long hours and put the needs of their kids before theirs. The Hindu religion has a implicit belief that parents deserve as much respect as God. Of course there are exceptions to everything in life like the example above.

If one's attitude is to find fault with everything in life,  even Maryada Purushotham Ram would be found wanting in character.  Some people are born with such negative characterestics due to some trauma that their Souls suffered in their previous births and they carry it forward for a few more rebirths till they have extinguished their Poorva Janma Phalans.  Such people are to be pitied and left to themselves.

Yes, karma follows you from one life to another is another Hindu belief. If you do good in this life you may see it now or in the next life. The idea is always do good. Most Hindus acknowledge this. Kar bhala so ho bhala. Jai Shree Ram Chandra ki jai.
