While it was a splendid ceremony (I watched the whole thing - congrats to the Chinese!), there was a bit of irony. The ceremony celebrated the life and works of Confucius - the same guy who was reviled and banned by the Govt. since Cultural Revolution (Confucius had been declared a feudal system supporter by the Gang of Four then)
pssst.. any news on the padmashree front?

>>> All that was done to keep you talking about your past gf's - and let me build some equity in the process (by filling the piggybank with coins).
I still think Seoul and Tokyo were much better infrastructure equipped at that time compared to Delhi. Today, those two cities are way above Delhi in ratings. Just look at the number of visitors coming to those two cities, particularly business ones.
I doubt India has the clout to ask for Olympics. I believe, infrastructurewise, the next decade belongs to middle east. Dubai's developments & pace is unheard of in modern times. I will be pleasantly shocked if India gets any Olympics before 2036.
I agree with you that a city doesn't have to be a world-class to host Olympics. In fact Beijing is not in that league either but it needs some basic infrastructure to host this mega event. I am currently working on a project to help city of Vancouver /Whistler to get ready for 2010 Winter Olympics. It's amazing how much effort put into this. We have estimated $30 billion dollars budget so far.

india should showcase four medals it has won in the history of olympics. i assume four but i maybe i am wrong.
actually, i meant to say individual medals.
