Peer pressure

Have you taken decisions, life changing or not,  just out of peer pressure and then regretted it badly?

Strangely enough, no!   All my mistakes were my own. :)

Hey Kris,

I admire your self control. I do not see your posts in day time> You only post late evening or weekends. Is that a decision you made and follow it or it just happens that way?

Right. Like you did NOT listen to your peers when they told you to keep your panties on, on that first date with that older guy.

yes - I have scumbed real bad career wise - ALL because of peer pressure

> I have scumbed real bad career wise...

This English Revolution is going too fast for my liking. What is scumbing? Is it a cross between succumbing and a scumbag?
Propagandhi122 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
it's bedding a scumbag.
carvaka posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
And what does that mean in the career context... "scumbing real bad career wise" -- does that involve bedding a scumbag boss or something?
Propagandhi122 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
yes. in this context it means that she's bedding a scumbag at home and would have liked to have bedded someone that earns a bigger paycheck and with more power to help the career.

i got drunk like a pig on blue ribband gin back in desh, and threw up on the carpet of a friend - all due to peer pressure. they make fun of me all the time because of that.

carvaka posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
You remind me of my fondly remembered blackouts (actually the binge-drinking that preceded the blackouts themselves.) Yeah, peer pressure does play a role in that.

My other regret about peer pressure is that I ever tried smoking. Should have been stronger.
Propagandhi122 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
my binge drinking never resulted in blackouts...puking sessions yes but never blacked out. max intake was 17 beers at one time, and a liter of scotch another. it wasnt pleasant the next couple of days. those memories makes me glad I gave up alcohol.
tejasvee posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
PG:  Doubly glad to know that there is not only an ex-puker, but an ex-alcoholic too to give me company!

My record was 12 Heiniken beers between 11 pm and 6 AM. Then that damn host woke us up at 10 AM and started driving. It was miserable that afternoon as I wasn't allowed to sleep for a long time, but my body wouldn't let me be awake.

I believe some people have natural resistance to getting 'high'. Very soon, I reached that stage wherein even 5 pegs of hard liquor wasn't giving moderate kick. Then 'mix' stuff started to artificially create nasha and that too didn't help.

Glad that I am ex-alcoholic now. Feels great to look back and realize what pathetic days they were for my body.
Propagandhi122 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
hey I never was an alcoholic...I never really enjoyed the high part of it. believe it or not, I drank coz I enjoyed the taste of beer, wine and scotch. if I didnt like the way it tasted, I wouldnt drink it. never liked tequila or vodka for that reason.
tejasvee posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
What I meant by 'alcoholic' is not exactly bewda stuff.. Someone who enjoys drinking a lot in one sitting. I was like that and anything and everything was fine except smelly stuff like Fenny or Tequila.

Anyway, what was the reason to quit alcohol? Was leaving tough?

For me it took 3-6 months to fully quit the 'urge'.

carvaka posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
I almost never puked. The one time I distinctly remember puking was in college. I drank a half bottle of Old Monk in 20 minutes flat with nothing to go with it, and ate some egg preparation at one of the shadiest joints in KGP. My friends had dropped me off in an empty hostel room and it was a nasty sight the next morning.

mf02 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
Talking of binge drinking and puking, I can not forget the "farewell" night from my college when all of us grads drank like a pig, mixing any thing and every thing and then 11 of us got into a Maruti 800 and drove to a friend's home and next thing I remember that there were 3 of us puking at the same time in the bathroom! I do not recall how I got from car to the bathroom. Next morning, I got to know that there was lot of cleaning done in the car, on the clothes, carpet at the home etc. etc! Fond memories..*sigh*
Vinod Gupte posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
i think i, too, suffered from these blackouts at least twice. friends kept telling me about something i thought i never did the next morning. maybe they were yanking me.

11 in M800? all boys? wink wink.
mf02 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
Well, I have been pretty famous in my circle for black-outs and I have been videotaped couple of times doing crazy stuff! Thankfully, that is a thing of past now...

11 in M800, all boys, all drunk!! Yeah...such was life back then...

:))

Since you guys are washing your dirty linens today(literally!!!) i will do the same, twice in my life so far I have been to the point of piss drunk and back. One time, I am told, I did a dharna in the middle of cunnigham road(banglore) . The other time was in chicago, a friends bachelor party, needless to say lots of booze and stripper didnt help a whole lot, the next thing i knew i was puking on the guys lawn.

> One time, I am told, I did a dharna in the middle of cunnigham road(banglore) .

One evening in October 2004, I campaigned for John Kerry on the main thoroughfare of downtown Berkeley
at around 1 am, stopping passersby and asking them to go vote for him. I don't remember doing any of it, but my friends tell me I got started when the bouncer outside a bar we were trying to get into asked for ID and when I showed him my AP driver's license, he said he won't accept it. Yeah, I don't know how that's related to Kerry, either.

mf02 posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago

Nice. Mr T. I guess we should create a thread on "piss drunk" stories...

tejasvee posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
Ouch.. plenty of 'pukers' out here.

Mine was worse. On the lawn of a famous resort/park. That was the last time rum, whiskey & beer got into stomach within a span of 15 minutes from each other.
Currer Bell posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago

you guys are like little boys having a peeing contest on the lawn.

tejasvee posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
CB - Hey.. it already happened. What's the shame in telling other losers who also thought they were the very few 'select' pukers out there?

Alcohol is such a dangerous thing in the gastro-intestinal cavity if the user doesn't know how to manage it property with food. No matter what you do, how long you wait, if it has to find it's way out through the top door, it will

How about sharing some girly shameful stuff?

Not necessarily.  Rape/unwanted pregnancy is not a happy ending.

BittuZing posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
i got drunk so many times but never threw up anywhere other than outdoors or bathroom (pot, not sink). I have cleaned up friends' puke, which in turn made me puke too. *ugh* Thanks....for bringing up binge drinking memories...

Pujan posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
Yes. Two decisions were major.

1. under H1b visa, pressure was always to get something started sooner. so always ended up picking wrong projects.

2. Invested in stocks based on others research. right now that $8000 is nothing but $8. not very big loss but still should not have done that.

these are the ones, only I can remember now.

tejasvee posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
Yes. Investing in stock market without knowing abc's of 'investment basics' or 'asset allocation'.

Burnt the hand badly during dot com bust.
BittuZing posted Re:Peer pressure on 1 month ago
yeah i forgot about this one. this one WAS dumb as fuq. I did it too. Bought stocks in 2000. Bought a bunch more ON MARGIN. Had to use my credit card to settle margin calls. More calls came. Stocks got sold. It was a bloodbath. Lost 70k cash just like that. 70k of hard earned H1B money is precious.  This peer pressure move was dumb indeed. and yes, I regret it. My wife regrets it x 1000, but yeah, me too.

Glad to know Bittu.. I have plenty of company here for acting on peer pressure.
