Tamil writer Sujatha passes away
Chennai, Feb. 27 Popular Tamil Writer 'Sujatha'alias Rangarajan passed away today at the Apollo Hospitals here after brief illness.
He was 72. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Reading his essays on computers as a kid was the key factor in me opting for computer science instead of medicine which my parents wanted me to study..May his soul rest in peace.

I love his humor laced detective novels and the masterpiece "karaiyellam shenbaga poo".

Sad, he was a good novelist.  He was well known for his writings on science fiction and he was way ahead
of his times in his thinking.

Great Man, Let his soul rest in peace.

Veeramani, the DK leader opined in his magazine viduthalai that Brahmin Tamil writers like Sujatha and Saandilyan used obscene and titillating language and indecent themes and thus screwed up the Tamil litreature.

Of course Kannadasan also said the same thing about Karunanidhi that MK used indecent themes in some of his novels.

Sujatha wrote a story in which an innocent girl gets married to a scumbag who secretly videotapes his intimate acts with his wife.

The story was made as a movie and it  was horrible. It was truly an indecent movie.

The man was creative in his writing though.

Shocked and feel sad .Great loss to Tamil. He was a trend setter who revolutionized Tamil novels . He was passionate about computers and his novels were contemporary, and made terrific impact on youth . Well his best is the Vasanth series, Karaiyellam, kanavu thozirchalai about film industry and so on .Later he switched to films and became a great screenplay writer known for humour and crisp dialogues
Great man who worked for BEL Bangalore .Big loss.May his soul rest inpeace

That is sad news. I have read some of his works (Nylon Kayiru comes to mind).  One novel/short story was set in Manhattan. About a couple who meet up and the guy thinks because the gal is in the US she would be easy, only to have been way off-base. The style in which it was rendered was cool.- At the end,  "aval fifth avenue-vai nokki viraivaga nadanthal" or  words to that effect. The fashionable urban setting contrasted with the inner turmoil--in the same  sentence was impressive..

Ironically, Harold Robbins --(ok, I'll duck!:)- maybe in the Adventurers/ Betsy?- has the central character take in some bitter news at his ex's apartment and on the way out mumbles to himself about parking being a problem in Manhattan. Similar style in different languages.

P.S. No, Sujatha iwas too talented a guy to plagiarize !:)

That's right. at least a few kids who have read his novels would have been inspired to opt for science courses.

nice name for the dog. did your mom name you "nila" ?. :-)

Oh, sorry to hear about his passing..

I enjoyed reading his serial  (mystery)stories...his style was so crisp and sophisticated (without being pretentious!)
And the banter/conversations between characters were smart.

I think he was the screenplay writer for Rajini's megahit movie..Sivaji..(I could be wrong).

*Mr. PS- how have you been? Have not seen you around...hope all is well.

Yes Madam Maria,

He has written screenplays or dialogue for many movies.  He introduced a new style.

I'm a bit busy at work. not spending much time here.  Hope you're good.

Ponniyin Selvan posted Re:Obituary: Tamil writer Sujatha on 6 mnths ago
I don't think I've read the story.

I like his ganesh-vasanth novels, "karaiyellam shenbaga poo", "ratham ore niram", and that historical spoof, hilarious "kanthalur vasanthakumaran kathai" came in kumudam.. and "en iniya yanthira".

You mean there was a Tamil dude who wrote under the pseudonym of Sujatha? And then there was this mallu homesexual dude yesterday! Good going...

Your comment about this great man shows typical (some) NI ignorance and (also arrogance if I may put).....

He was not only a writer. He was a scientist who worked in BEL, Bangalore and he was the key person behind the EVM (Electronic Voting Machines) which changed our election processess considerably. His writings were great and brought science to the common man in his local language.

He was a genius who could answer to questions on any subject with respect to science/space/engineering/biology including anicent Tamizh religious literature.

and what exactly have those comments got to do with your yada yada? the question is, why did this writer write as "sujatha"? why not "mahalingam"? was he into cross dressing or something? that's all we want to know.

All minorities tend to think like when they are part of a bigger group. I don't blame you.. If I didn't hear his name, that's not my fault, that means he was not important enough to be known by a broader audience..
Uppili posted Re:Obituary: Tamil writer Sujatha on 6 mnths ago
Here is something about not-so-important man not known among the Broader Thackereyite Audience.

Let us wait and see what sort of a "broader audience" he had...

A person's real worth is appreciated only at his funeral by the kind of people who visit him.

Stay tuned.

_____________

That is an interesting statement.

*Some of it is true and one can see genunine expressions of sympathy...but,  often there are just as many people in the crowd who never showed any appreciation/offered any help to the person when they were alive... and put on a sympathy show...with lots of crocodile tears!
