Goodness, just look at all the responses!
Is it too much to ask...or kill you all to be normal once in a while and say Indian women are just as beautiful as their/our counterparts..which is the truth.
All mockery, sarcasm...and all kinds of stuff in the name of humor, do you have to constantly put down your/our own women and be rude? Do you not have more than a few Indian women in your lives...the women who have loved you and taken care of you, part of your lives in some way...you find beautiful just as in any other nationality, group or other identiies?
I don't think I have been a part of any forum or group...which puts down their/our women in every way possible, every single day, in the name of fun..it is really quite disheartenening...as bad as it is here, it seems to be getting worse.

'normal' as in normal way of thinking? I know this is a sensitive topic to you because you feel that Indian men (CH) unfairly categorize Indian women as unattractive. To be candid, Indian women are themselves are guilty of: not taking care of their bodies; being critical of fellow Indian women's looks. How many times have you heard 'aunties' at parties and get togethers say that so-and-so is married to an 'ugly gal' or short and fat gal? Once at a wedding, I came pretty close to telling an aunty off for bad mouthing the bride. But I didn't want to make a scene. She was wondering (loud & clear) as to how her nephew picked that unattractive gal to marry. Obviously, she didn't have a clue about 'self-arranged'/'love' marriages.
Now, coming back to the 'most beautiful women in the world' topic, I don't think any country can claim that they have the most beautiful women. The good old cliche, "beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" still holds true.

Well, the sensitive part is only when Indian women are unfairly stereotyped in any matter. Not just their looks.

In my experiences, the aunties and grandmas I know and meet are quite warm, loving and non-critical for the most post. If anything it is the women and men in your age group (perhaps majority here fall in that age group) and those who are younger who are more into sulking and whining about a lot of things- being critical of everything and everyone.

Yes, true. But, as a society- when we set standards and are brainwashed by what beauty is supposed to be, then it affects the self-image and self-confidence of men and women.

Mariamma, be fair - CHers put down men (and everything in between) just as ferociously. If anything, you should be delighted at this equal-opportunity putting-down, shorn of all patronizing, paternalistic, PC attitudes.

May be I have reached my limits of tolerance, may be the negative energy is exhausting and disheartening to see anyone being put down.
It may be surprising to you...but, I do think sometimes being paternalistic, maternalistic and and being protective (if appropriate) is not the end of the world...I don't mind being PC and others being PC around me.
We are human- it is okay to be sensitive to the feelings of others...it does not make us weak, imo, it makes us strong.

I agree some of the insults and namecalling tends to be gratuitous and could crush some sensitive soul foolish enough to get into a scrap on CH. But I see lots of women, you included, brush off those offensive comments about body-image, body parts etc and give back in full measure.
So if anything, these rough and tumble exchanges could serve to toughen aforementioned sensitive souls and make them more worldly-wise - a lesser-known but very valuable service provided by CHers to the desi community.

As I've said before, I do try my best to respond and interact with almost all posters, even if some of their posts cross the line (frankly, some of the regulars are so predictable about their comments about women, I hardly read them...unless their post is about something else).
And male-female posters have history and the sparks seems to fly- almost like fatal attraction, no point anyone else getting into it. However, today's thread about Indian women was in general and posted by someone who is not a regular, don't see why men can't be a little more magnanimous and generous.
*Intelligent people can and should disagree...and rough and tumble is fine, if there are some positive affirmations and pats on the back or hugs to balance it out. If one only responds negatively, they lose all credibiltiy in my eyes.

explain to me why hollywood does not have any desi heroine.
Till now....Asians are reduced to playing stereotyped characters... some doctor with a two line dialogue, or some gas station employee or some nerd in the background.... but this could also be because there are very few talented Indian origin actors in the US...
In the next 10-20 years you should start seeing more Indian origin folks in Movies, TV , Media related fields... afterall Indian migration started peaking only in the last 20-30 years ..so these youngsters are just out of colleges, speciality field schools...
You already see Indian origin folks from UK making it into Media & entertainment industry....(since there the migration had started much earlier than US).. the same will happen here in US.

BTW, correct me if I'm wrong, the other recents hits for Asian actors have been Memoir of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, but those have "traditional" portrayals of Asians. Then you have Jackie Chang Seems that Harold & Kumar are the most ordinary portrayals.
I like what Shyamalan does in his movies - throws in random desi representation, even tho Bruce Willis or Paul Giamatti is the star.

I do agree with this subject line. I think while an average Indian woman may not be overall 'gorgeous', she would still have some distinctive features of beauty - dark eyes, full lips, etc.
If you had to name 5 beautiful Indian women that you know, it's a piece of cake.

I think Lebanese and European gypsies are amazing -- strong features and they have amazing eyes!

There are beautiful women and not-so-beautiful (read OK or sometimes ugly) women in every part of the world.
I have found beauty in almost every race/linguistic group.. yet not-so-pretty among the same too.
So claims such as Indian women are the MOST beautiful or the MOST ugly are as loose as holding an ice cube on your palm for one hour.
How can we have a topic about woman's beauty without getting senti?
