Impressions

We hear so much at Sulekha about how the Saree is the height of sartorial elegance and how it has withstood the test of time. But what do you actually think of the indian women in america who wear sarees to public places such as the mall, or a fair? Are you embarassed, fobbed-out by them?

Another thing: Do you feel or know if Caucasians and African-Americans consider sari-clad women to be backwards or deserving of sympathy? I ask because I've noticed that muslim women in head-scarves are treated with delicacy and sympathy, cuz the view is that they are somehow enslaved.

All the muslim women I know wear head-scarves cuz they're proud of their religion and one even said that she was more modest than me. My lifestyle isn't modest but my clothes are quite conservative.

Why should anyone be embarassed? Sometimes I wear sarees too...see lots of other women who do....don't think it is a big deal. Don't think anyone has ever treated me any differently because of it...must be the personality:)

No...but, they are more friendly and warm to women in saris (almost respectful)....usually get compliments (whether they mean it or not!)

I made some comments about this- in your other thread.

Depends on the saree and the *hotness* factor of the wearer!

If it is a black tie dinner for a bunch of young doctors just finishing up residency, the richly decked up sarees worn by the young nubile wives is seen with the same awe reserved for aishwarya rai pics. "We are like this wonly" is a refrain that metro mainstream americans seem to have imbibed over the past decade.

Sending your daughter in a chaniya choli type dress for the prom is still considered exoticizing adolescence and you can bet there are connoisseur young gentlemen that would love to ride the stretch limos with them.

Not sure if I expressed it well ...hope you get it.

Is this 'backward' or 'deserving sympathy'?
