Try to connect with family there - one thing you will be really surprised with is the open arms and the warm welcome you get from people you've never met. (Of course, these people will freely criticize and comment on every little thing you do or wear!)
Take the tours and visit different things. Visit the caves, the temples and other places locals take for granted.
Bring flushable wet wipes and pepto-bismo and all is good :-)

India is a great Tourist destination. You dont need your amma-appa to take you there...there are some well-guided tours & tourism agencies out there.
....& if your are trying to trace your roots back in India..then get in touch with relatives, friends..if you are still in touch with them.

Never been to India. I wonder what it is like to live w/o electricity and toothpaste. uh and toilet paper.

Ok. Consider this: you are traelling from a big city to a small place with a famous temple. You rented a taxi and the driver stopped the car to put water in the radiator (or to relieve himself of some weight). The night before, you were fascinated by the aroma of the food at the roadside 'cafe' and succumbed to temptation. Just as the driver goes to find some water you have to suddenly attend to nature's call. You have to go and relieve yourself on the roadside. You find a bush, quickly drop your pants and undies and squat. Then you realize the importance of carrying a roll of toilet paper when you are on the road. If you didn't have the foresight, don't worry. You can do what the arabs do or hope that there are some plants in the bush with soft and broad leaves. After finishing the job, pray to Varahavatara and he comes to earth's rescue! Zip your pants up and get back into the car. The driver will realize that you are no naive NRI and he may not rip you off.
If you really think about it, the whole process is natural and environmentally compatible! When you return to Amrika, you can tell your friends what a great place India is!

I don't know how to put this but......how to Indian people finish the job?
Dont worry... there are live demonstrations of how that is done in most parts of India. ...specially in cities... khulle-aam hota hain.... but be careful.... in vIllages, you might get beaten up trying to peek into a bush or into the fields....

Thinking about it. Once I was taking water for one of the elders in a family (from village). I didn't take a tray, I just held the glass with the tips of my fingers, holding it down. I got such a big bashing for that.. 'paani de rahi hai ya lauta lekar ja rahi hai?'. She didn't drink that water even. I had to go back and bring it back, in a new glass, properly holding it from the bottom.
Think about what would you do if you did not have toilet paper? Do you still want to go? Btw, you will have to rent your own elephant while you are there. Thank God that Hertz rents elephants for tourists..

Even the shops and department stores are similar to those in the US - you pick what you want and check them out at the counter. Tell that to your parents and it will be a shock to them. The hotels and homes - many middle class have western tpye toilets and shower, etc... And most girls wear jeans and skirts (or none at all...just kidding).
