All animals in the canine family have this tendency of putting thier fore and aft legs, in the same place when one set vacates that space. Consequently, they can balance themselves on a very narrow strip of terra firma, and unerringly come forward.
A catwalk is a very narrow walkway, which crisscross the Engine Rooms of Ocean going vessels (ships) over which the engineers walk with the same ability of a cat or a feline's ability to balance in very narrow places. Now a days fashion shows do not have catwalks they have ramps. But in spite of the widened space of the ramp, the models strut, with an ungainly gait, making one puke.

Dear Sophi,
Yes, I believe it came from that only... Look at cat when it walks... holding its head high... a straight walk which is very very balaned... not like one leg going to London while another one is still in India... and when it walks... it creates no sound... he he he not like me when I walk... 'KHAT KHAT KHAT..." you can make out Poonam is coming from one kilometer aheag... hehehe no jokes...ok...
A person is suppose to walk in a manner which is very much similar to Cat, and its always alert when walking... so I think yes CAT WALK came from a Cat's walk.
You said it. Yes men swagger and flick their imaginary tails. But what about the uncontrolled undulation of the long plaited hair of a woman, which if not held firm by an artificial restrainer, has this obnoxious habit of jumping from one buttocks (the human rump) to the other? Especially when the damsel thinks that a little bit of artificiality in her gait would make the onlooking male swoon anticipating the non existing physical intimacy?
Interesting question. I did some research and this is what I found:
Catwalk is the runway or the bridge on which the models walk.
The term aslo signifies literally how the models walk - placing 1 foot before another to exaggerate the hip movement :-)
