We indians really go ga-ga over self help books. This can be seen from the volume and range of self-help books that is now being stocked in your neighbourhood book store. They are all there....giving us 12 rules to be successful to .........10 ways to be rich .....or even The 12 rules to make us happy....and so on and so forth. But do they really help us--I do not think they do in any sense whatsoever.
If we start from the person who started it all- Dale Carnegie with his "How to win ....", I remember attacking it with gusto and though dissapointed after reading it, my resolve to start applying his principles. But I never did because the situations Carnegie describes just isn't practical in India. For example, there's this example of a motor salesman who puts his hand on the motor surface and turns truimphanly to the complaining foremen and says something like "Its not hot, Mr. Joe. The permissible temperature rise is 60 deg F" (This may not be very accurate as I read the book years ago). But ask any motor salesman in India and he will just laugh. No 1# unlike Mr Joe, Mr. Sen will simply not agree even if you show him the O&M manual No 2#Mr. Sen may agree but he won't take the responsibility and refer the matter to his boss Mr. Subramaniam... ..and let's face it in most cases the salesman will not be able to place his hand on the motor anyway due to red tape. This same argument is also true for recent bestsellers like "Who moved my cheese?'
So, isn't it time we get out of this trap by supposedly management gurus of the West and revert back to our Indian guidelines again! Lets face it, if our system had really needed help, then our economy today would have been under recession and the US economy booming, instead of to the contrary.

Of course!
If one wants more cynicism and negativity about everything..some times the posts in this group/forum can be used as a self-help manual! Talk about dampening the spirit! It is such a turn-off.
And the cynicism and negativity can be so contagious (and some so easily buy into that here!)
Self help books are tools/suggestion guides...(obviously some are good and others)..One does NOT have to put their "common sense" in storage and can be "selective" when they read these books..you take what makes sense and can be helpful and toss the rest aside! *And some self-help books do have the power to change lives..see it all the time!
*Of course, imo again..the great books (religious books) offer some of the great timeless self-help suggestions as well! Many self-help books are inspired by them..and made to look "modern" and attactive!
Nothing wrong in seeking ways to transform ourselves in a cynical world and make ourselves better human beings.

On an other note.. I have read Shiv Khera's You Can Win. It was one book which apart from the self help stuff also packed in some great stuff... Examples that were true.. facts.. There is nothing better than facts that motivate us.. help us do things we want..
I believe every1 of us has the strength to ride the stars, but is just not able sense it.. It is only when see we others doing what we havent been able 2 that we bcum aware of our strengths & potential..
And I agree with you...
*Not everyone is lucky to have people in their life who can offer wise advice, motivate them. And as you say- we are social creatures who look for sources/want various influences in our lives to "shape" us..(more than we want to admit!)

Good morning.
I suppose smart women are not so different from not so smart women...when it comes to all kinds of human behaviors..every person is dfiferent...and act/will be different according to different situations in life.
There is no need to ask/answer to personal questions anywhere..unless one wants to by choice. I choose not to ask or answer. If you want me to interact with you in this public board..kindly refrain from asking me personal questions.
thanks,
M
