I haven't read this book, but gave it to a family member as a gift -- planned to borrow it afterwards ;-) I think the family member did like it.. but, will make a note of this 'feel good' vs 'substantial' aspect.
I felt the same way. I'm always surprised when people, especially guys, tell me that they found the book fascinating. It has a very Sufi, mystical, magical, romantic approach to life. I think guys like this book because of all the traveling the hero does to fulfill his personal legend and women must like the part at the end where he finds a lot of gold.
I thought the whole book was garbage, but were you surprised that he fell in love with a woman named Fatima? I mean Santiago is Christian, Paulo Coehlo is probably Christian and out of nowhere you have this Fatima. I wonder if Santiago converts to Islam for her, that's the feelingI got. What do you think?
Oh, something interesting that Madhu told me about Paulo: his parents apparently had him institutionalized for several years cuz they thought he was insane.
Ok, write bakc if you have time. Am curious about your views on this book. Incidentally, The Devil and Miss Prym by th same author is a far better book, one which I enjoyed immensely.
Your forgot something Bittu, CH .... If we spent as much time reading novels as is spent on CH, or should I say that much time absent from CH there would be time to read novels :)
